This week, I observed Ms. Sacha’s class learning about ten frames, how to color within the lines, and how to cut and paste numbers in the correct order. Ms. Hook's class focused on tracing letters and numbers, CVC words (pig, bug, bat), and working on place values with ten frames. Mr. Armstrong’s class finished NWEA testing, learned new math vocabulary, and learned about adding and subtracting within 1,000. Ms. Cantin’s class focused on spelling, vocabulary, and prime factorization. I observed Ms. Ruegg's class learn about solving equations with irrational numbers, absolute values, taking a vocabulary test, and diving into their ELA curriculum by talking/reading about Greek/Roman history. All students practiced bus safety and participated in their first earthquake drill of the year. It was a wonderful week full of smiles and lots of learning!

weekly update
I spent time in each classroom this week (that's where the fun is!) and was so happy to see kids engaged in learning. I saw Ms. Sacha's class practicing counting to 20 with pipe cleaners and beads, raising quiet hands, and learning how to cut with scissors. Ms. Hook's class practiced long vowels, such as turning 'hop' into 'hope' and 'cut' into 'cute,' practicing writing sentences, and looking for long vowels in sentences as they read together. Mr. Armstrong's class worked on math word problems, took math assessments, and started learning about place value relationships. Ms. Cantin's class created their Mission Statement, 'This year, our class will do our personal best to be kind and respectful to everyone while helping each other learn.' They also watched and then reflected in their journals about a Ted Talk that focused on asking for help. Ms. Ruegg's class jumped into science by discussing how they are connected to the patterns they see in the sky. They also had their first spelling bee and learned about journalism by reading articles in the ICO. Overall, it was a great week at Horicon, and I hope everyone enjoys the three-day weekend!  Attached are the self-portrait collages from Ms. Ruegg and her students.
